Betting Terms & Conditions

These are the rules that settle a bet. They describe what the system actually does today — where a rule does not exist yet, this page says so rather than implying one.

Betting uses play money. Stakes and returns are settled against the practice balance in your account. Real-money betting is offered only where ROX is licensed for it.

Acceptance

• Bets are accepted only while a race is open for betting, and betting closes ten minutes before the off.
• A race is open for betting only once its field is final. Group races complete their runners and close entries 72 hours before the off, and bets are accepted from then until the ten-minute close, so the card you bet into does not change afterwards.
• Close time is decided by the ROX server clock, not your device. A bet submitted after the cut-off is rejected even if your screen still shows time remaining.
• Every price is re-checked on the server when the bet is placed. The price shown on the card is a quote. If the market has moved, the bet is accepted at the price current at that moment — it is not rejected, and the price sent by your browser is never used.
• A bet exists only once the stake has been taken from your balance. If placement fails at any point, no stake is kept.

The field

• Every race runs with twelve gates.
• The field is complete 72 hours before the off, when entries close. Some gates are held by ROX Official horses completing the card. Betting opens only once the field is complete, so the card you bet into does not change afterwards.
• Because a race is always twelve runners, there are no non-runners and no reduction-factor deductions. If you have bet elsewhere and are looking for that rule, it does not apply here.

Settlement

• Every race produces a full finishing order for all twelve gates.
• Bets settle automatically once the race has finished.
• Betting is pool-based. Everyone backing the same market on the same race pays into one pool. At settlement ROX takes a rake of 12%, and everyone who backed the winning outcome shares what is left, in proportion to what they staked. You are betting against the other players, not against ROX.
• The price you see is an estimate, not a live pool price. It is calculated from the same ratings that decide the race, with a margin — it does not track the money in the pool and does not move as other players bet. What you receive is your share of the pool at settlement, which may be higher or lower than the figure shown when you placed.
• The dividend is rounded down to the cent. The remainder — the breakage — goes to the rake, and is accounted rather than lost.
• Winnings are credited to the same balance the stake was taken from.

Thin pools, and the rake

• No rake is taken on a pool with only one bettor. If you are the only person in a market, there is nobody to bet against — the only money in the pool is yours. The dividend comes out at exactly 1.00 and your stake comes back, rather than your stake less 12% for having been first.
• You still lose the bet if your selection does not come in. That is the bet.
• A pool below $50 does not run — at that size, rounding to the cent distorts the split, so the dividend stops being a fair division of the pool and starts being an artefact of the arithmetic. It voids and every stake is refunded in full, with no rake.
• Your return depends on who else backed what. In a thin pool a well-backed selection can pay less than an estimate suggested, and a market nobody else touched can pay a great deal more. The pool size is shown beside every price so you can see which you are looking at.

These are play-money rules. Real-money betting will require a minimum number of bettors before a pool runs, and that rule will be published here before any deposit is possible.

When nobody wins

• On Forecast, Quinella, Tricast and Trio, a pool that nobody wins is not refunded. It is carried forward and added to the same market at a later race, and grows until somebody lands it.
• On Winner, Place, Show and Gate there is always a winner, because a race always produces a finishing order. Those pools never roll.
• A carried pool is raked once, in the race it was staked in. It is not raked again each time it rolls.
• A cancelled race and a pool under the minimum are refunded in full, and neither takes anything from a carry built up by earlier races.

Voids and refunds

• If a race is cancelled, every bet on it is voided and the full stake returned.
• Each line on a ticket is its own bet and wins or loses on its own. There are no multiples: the lines do not combine and the odds do not multiply.
• A cancelled race voids only the lines on that race; the rest of the ticket stands. The voided stake is returned. ROX does not settle the cancelled leg at odds of 1.00 and let the rest of the multiple stand, which is what some other books do — the whole bet is refunded instead.
• If settlement cannot complete for a bet, the bet stays open and unpaid until it is resolved. The stake is not lost and the bet is not silently written off.

Limits

Every limit below is enforced. Limits not listed here do not exist.

A ticket over $5,000 is refused whole. Nothing is placed and no stake is taken — a slip is one decision, and half of it is not what you chose.

There is currently no cap on what a single bet can return. If one is introduced it will be published here in the same change that enforces it.

These are play-money limits. Real-money limits will be set under licence and will not be these numbers.

A multiple's legs must come from different races. Two selections on the same race cannot be combined into one multiple.

Currency

• Play balances have no cash value, are not convertible, and cannot be withdrawn.
• The signup bonus and daily top-up are play money and exist for practice only.
• Real-money betting is not available. When it is, it will be offered only where licensed, and these terms will be updated before it opens.

Fairness

Race results are produced by the published draw described under Technology & Fair Play. Every race is drawn after entries close, and the seed it was drawn from is published with the result, so anyone can recompute the finish and check it. Nothing on this page claims more than that.
