Provable Rarity
Why a ROX horse is provably rare, provably yours, and outlives the platform itself.
Your horse is an NFT on Polygon, and it is yours. While you race it, it is held in the ROX custody smart contract — that is what lets a horse enter a gate, carry a record and change hands instantly. You can withdraw it to your own wallet whenever you want. A horse outside custody cannot race, because ROX only runs horses the contract can verify it holds, so withdrawing is a choice between racing it and holding it yourself.
Every game before us asked you to trust the company that its rare items were really rare. The last market leader's published trait odds turned out to be up to 100× away from what buyers were actually sold. ROX is built so you never have to take our word for anything: the odds are provable, the draw is provable, and the scarcity is enforced by code that no one can change — not even us.
This page explains, in plain terms, how that works and why it holds.
Your horse is really yours
(At genesis.) A ROX horse will be a genuine NFT on Polygon: when you buy one the token moves to your wallet, the same way any real NFT marketplace works, and we will not hold it for you or be able to take it back. Until the mint, none of that is true — a horse is a database row, a purchase moves a play-money balance, and ownership is a record we keep and could change. That is the gap the mint closes, and it is the reason to wait for it rather than assume it. Its bloodline, genotype, coat, sex, pedigree and full race record live on the blockchain, public and permanent.
That has a consequence worth saying out loud: your horse outlives us. ZED Run switched off its servers and the game vanished — but the horses were never on those servers, so they survived. ROX goes further: your horse's traits, its family tree, and even its artwork are stored on-chain and on permanent storage (Arweave), so a ROX horse keeps its identity and its provable rarity forever, whatever happens to the company.
Provable rarity — the odds can't drift
Before a single horse is sold, the entire collection is generated and sealed with a cryptographic fingerprint (a Merkle root) written to the blockchain. Think of it as photographing the whole stud book and notarising the photo before the doors open. From that moment:
- The rare counts are frozen and countable. We publish "0.1% Super Rare coats, 102 Hyperions, and no more" — and because the sealed collection is public, anyone can count it and confirm the numbers are exactly what we promised. Nothing can quietly drift the way it did last time.
- No trait can be altered afterwards. Change one horse's coat and the fingerprint no longer matches. It would be caught instantly, by anyone, forever.
So "rare" on ROX isn't a marketing word. It's a number you can verify with your own eyes, today and in ten years.
What the seal does and does not cover
The sealed collection is the 26,992 genesis horses. Two other kinds of horse exist, and honesty about the boundary is worth more than a tidy sentence:
- Foals. A bred horse is minted after the seal, so it is not inside the fingerprint. It does not need to be: its parents are on-chain, the odds it was drawn against are published, and the caps it lives under are contract rules. The seal proves what was made; the breeding contract proves what can be added.
- Migrated ZED horses. A horse brought over from ZED RUN was never ours to seal — it is somebody else's token, minted years ago on a contract we do not control. Its traits come from ZED's own metadata and we copy them rather than assign them.
Neither can touch the genesis counts, and that is the part worth checking. A migrated horse keeps its own bloodline — Szabo, Nakamoto — and can never become a Hyperion. A mixed foal gets its own bloodlines entirely. So "102 Hyperions" survives migration, breeding, and both at once, because nothing outside the ROX ladder can enter it.
If that guarantee ever needed a footnote, it would be here. It does not.
An open catalogue — nothing is hidden from you
Freezing the collection proves what exists. The second question is: could an insider quietly take the best horses before you ever see them? No — and the reason is simpler than a lottery.
Genesis is not a blind box. Every one of the 26,992 horses is listed with its traits visible and a published price for its genotype, and you choose the horse you buy. There is no draw to rig, because there is no draw — you can see exactly what you are getting before you pay.
That is a stronger guarantee than a lottery, not a weaker one. A random mint asks you to trust that the randomness was honest. A sealed catalogue asks you to trust nothing: every horse's traits were fixed and notarised before the doors opened, so the only thing left to decide is which one you want.
And the crown is not quietly held back. The 102 Hyperions exist in the sealed collection where anyone can count them, and the rarest of them — Hyperion DN0 and DN1 — are reserved by design, released deliberately rather than sold from the open catalogue. That is a stated policy you can check against the sealed roster, not a secret.
Every horse's coat, pattern, mane and eyes were rolled against the odds published in these docs when the collection was generated, and then sealed into the fingerprint with everything else. Within a bloodline's own palette the odds are the same at every price: a $25 Cosmo draws a Super Rare coat on exactly the same terms as a $5M horse — 23 of the 29 Super Rares in the collection are Cosmos.
What the price does change is which palette you draw from. Hyperions wear the six Kepler naturals and no other bloodline can, in the mint or by breeding; the 67 Common, Uncommon and Rare colours of the seven planets are closed to Hyperions in turn. Super Rare is the one tier every bloodline shares. So the odds are published and equal, the palette is not — and both halves are countable in the sealed collection. You pay for performance genetics; looks were luck, and because the result was notarised before the sale, the luck is checkable rather than merely promised.
You can verify your own horse in four steps: read its metadata, recompute the hash of its seven trait values, read the hash stored on the contract, and check its proof against the frozen root. If any trait had been altered afterwards, the numbers would not match.
(On ROX the draws that matter — a race result and a foal's bloodline — are made after you commit, and the race's seed is published with the result so the finish can be recomputed from it. What you are trusting us on is how that seed was chosen; Fairness & RNG says which half is checkable and which is not. Genesis traits were sealed in advance instead, which is why they need no randomness at all.)
Scarcity that can't be inflated away
The games that came before died the same death: unlimited breeding flooded the world with millions of assets until "rare" meant nothing and the floor fell to zero. ROX makes that mathematically impossible, because the limits are written into the contract, not into a policy we could change:
- The crown (DN0) has exactly one door: the King or the Queen covering another Hyperion. No other pairing produces a DN0 at any odds — the breeding function floors an ordinary Hyperion pairing at DN1. And the door is narrow twice over: breeding slots are computed as
5 − generationrather than stored, so they cannot be granted or topped up, which gives the King and the Queen ten covers between them, ever, and a hard ceiling of twelve pure bloods. Every bred Hyperion, DN0 included, is also issued a crown number: the numbers run 1 to 100, each once, and when the hundredth is born there are no more. So the elite is capped at 202 ever — 102 minted plus 100 bred. These are a generated column and a unique index, not promises. - Every foal's genotype sits below its parents', and breeding slots shrink each generation, so the population can grow but the elite can't.
- The rarest coats can be inherited but never re-rolled, and pure black and pure white belong to the King and Queen alone — no other horse can ever wear them.
- Migration cannot inflate a ROX tier. A migrated horse keeps its own species and bloodline, and a ROX × ZED foal is a third thing again — so no number on this page moves when the migration desk opens.
The result: the horse population is bounded at roughly 709,000 by slot decay — about 26× genesis, ever, across every generation as the game grows — but the things sold as rare stay rare, by construction.
Trustless bloodlines
Because every foal is minted with its parents recorded on-chain, a horse's entire pedigree is on the blockchain — not in our database. When a champion's descendants sell for a premium, their descent from that champion is something a buyer can prove, not something we assert. For a breeding economy, that provable lineage is the whole point.
The one-line version
The game before us said: "trust us that it's rare and fair." ROX says: "here's the proof — forever — and the rules are enforced by code you can't change, not even we can."
Fairness on ROX isn't a policy. It's an architecture: seal the collection before the sale, publish the odds to the decimal, show every horse before you buy it, draw the randomness in the open where a draw actually happens, and let anyone verify every horse for as long as the blockchain exists.
